Hives

Hives or urticaria, is an outbreak of swollen, pale red bumps or plaques (wheals) on the skin that appear suddenly — either as a result of the body’s reaction to certain allergens, or for unknown reasons. Hives usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting. It is a complex problem and may reflect a variety of underlying disorders.

A combination of wind and cold, for instance, may cause “cold hives”. Wind and heat, on the other hand, may trigger angry and red “heat hives”. Poor blood circulation, as the flow of qi and blood would be hampered, the person may also see dark red or purple wheals on areas where there is pressure on the skin, such as the areas underneath a watch or belt.

Treatment For Hives With Acupuncture

Acupuncture has long been used to treat hives in the Asian world. Acute or chronic hives can be easily and effectively treated with acupuncture. The combination of ordinary acupuncture and ear acupuncture has been observed to be a highly effective cure of chronic urticarial. Acupuncture or acupuncture like techniques may provide an effective alternative for treatment of hives, particularly those refractory to medication therapy. More than 90% of patients with acute urticaria experience complete relief with acupuncture therapy.
