More than 30 millions Americans have migraine headache, including many teenagers. While many respond well to a variety of prescription medications, some do not benefit a whole lot or they experience significant side effects. Acupuncture is a good adjunct or alternative.
Over the years, I have treated many teenagers with migraine or severe headache. About 80% notice dramatic improvement. From the energy perspective, headache is considered a state of “energy congestion” in the head and acupuncture helps opening and facilitating energy flow. Favorable outcome includes the following:
- decreased frequency and intensity of headache
- better response to medications
- decreased medication usage and therefore, the side effect
Adolescents Respond Well To Acupuncture
I believe that the main reason adolescents respond better to acupuncture than adults is their abundant energy. Nevertheless, very chronic headaches are still difficult to treat, either due to increased sensitivity of the peripheral pain receptors or heightened awareness of the sensory cortex in the brain to pain signals, or some other unknown mechanisms. I would strongly urge you or your children to try acupuncture sooner than later.
